| Accessorize with Luxurious Linens Warm Bedding for Cold Winter NightsAt the end of a long, chilly winter's day, nothing beats crawling into a welcoming, warm bed and snuggling in for the night. Here are some tips for staying warm this winter. How cold is your house? With heating costs soaring this year, many people are turning down the thermostat. The room temperature is one variable in deciding how warm your bedding needs to be. Down or synthetic: Many consumers are confused about the benefits of down compared to down-alternative options on the market. Amy Webster, vice president of Basic Bedding at Hollander Home Fashions, notes that one of the key benefits of nature's warmth - down - is the ability to create a warm layer between the human body and the comforter. Down alternatives may not match this level of warmth. However, in recent years, down alternative fibers have become more down-like in their feel and can be a more cost-effective option than down. How warm is it? If you choose to go with down, be sure to check the fill power when shopping. Fill power is the measurement of down's ability to loft and hold air. “A product with a higher fill power provides better insulation than a product with low fill power,” says Webster. A product with 600 fill power or more provides extra warmth. What's the thread count? Thread counts indicate how tightly the fabric has been woven. To help determine the quality of the product being purchased, keep these numbers in mind: 180 to 220 thread count is considered “good;” 230 to 280 thread count is “better;” and 300 to 400 thread count is considered “best.” The higher the thread count, the less likely that down feathers will work their way out. What's your body type? The smaller the person, the more it will take to keep that person warm. A smaller person should look for products with more down and higher fill power, whereas a larger person will need bedding with less down and lower fill power.
